Japanese election: Abe set to win super majority

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling coalition has won the majority of seats in Japan's upper house vote Sunday, according to exit polls cited by local media. While official results are still being tallied, early exit polls showed Sunday evening that Prime Minister Abe's ruling coalition had won 61 out of 121 seats.Together with the pro-constitutional revisionists, his coalition looks set to gain a two-thirds majority of the upper house. And if he does secure a majority in the upper house, he can hold a vote on a controversial constitutional change."I set a goal to win the majority of contested seats as I went to the people," Abe told CNN affiliate NHK on Sunday. "I now feel relieved that the ruling coalition attained more than the majority of contested seats."There have been vigorous discussions in Japan about changing the pacifism clause in the constitution that could allow Japanese forces to fight overseas. The Prime Minister said in interviews with Japanese media that revising the constitution is his party's wish, but he needed to leave it to the constitution panel to discuss how to make those changes, as it had not reached a consensus.
