Two police officers were killed in ‘ambush-
style attacks’ as they sat in their cars in
Iowa.
Officers rushed to the scene after reports
of shots being fired at around 1.06am.
When they arrived
they found one of
their colleagues’ dead
body in the Urbandale
suburb of Des
Moines. A second
officer was then
discovered about 20
minutes later in the
city.
Police have now captured the man
suspected of killing the two officers.
Officers from Dallas County Sheriff’s
Office and Iowa State Patrol have taken
46-year-old Scott Michael Greene into
custody and are now taking him to Des
Moines. Both officers are deceased,’ an initial
statement from the Des Moines police
department said. ‘The shootings appear to
have been ambush-style attacks.’
At a press
conference, Des
Moines Police Sgt
Paul Parizek added
that there is ‘clearly
danger’ for police in
the area right now,
because the victims
were gunned down
while sitting in their cars rather than while
they were responding to an incident.
The shootings happened less than two
miles apart from each other, Sgt Parizek
said, and both took place along main
streets which cut through residential
areas.
Urbandale officers are equipped with body
cameras, but it’s not clear whether these
officers’ cameras were recording at the
time of the killings.
‘There’s somebody out there shooting
police officers,’ he said, struggling to
control his emotions. ‘We hope to find him
before somebody else gets hurt.’
Authorities have doubled up on the number
of officers in response to the attacks.
