South African Politician Thinks Nigerians are No-Nonsense People. Is He Right Though?

In a new interview, Julius Malema, the leader of the South African party called the ‘Economic Freedom Fighters’, has revealed why he is such a fierce character: he is simply exhibiting an attitude he thinks is Nigerian. “ I am like Nigerians to white people. Nigerians don’t tolerate any nonsense that comes their way, that’s why there are not so many white people in Nigeria ,” says the vocal politician. He went on to explain that white people “ think Nigerians are rude people. They think the Nigerians they are not polite. But that’s not the case. “ The Nigerians don’t tolerate nonsense, and every time they answer you will think they are fighting, but they are not fighting. They are, in fact, they know what they want .” This statement has many Nigerians looking back on our social behaviours – how we relate with foreigners and if there is any truth to what Malema claims. While some have dismissed the vocal politician’s line of thought as simply reaching, others agree with him. Malema’s statement, however, brings to mind the culture of ‘gra gra’, which explains why a Nigerian can be easily picked from a crowd; their penchant for over assertiveness is often perceived as aggressive and rude. Is it possible then that Malema is simply talking about the Nigerians gra gra which he may have witnessed, especially because we have a large population of Nigerians living in South Africa?
