extending his contract with Atletico
Madrid, despite cutting it short previously,
and admitted he will only leave when it’s
for the ‘good of the club’.
The Argentine coach, who has previously
been linked with Chelsea and Arsenal, has
brought immense success to the Vicente
Calderon over the last five years, winning
La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Europa
League, as well as reaching the
Champions League final on two occasions.
But his future looked
somewhat unclear
when he reduced his
contract by two years
to 2018.
The 46-year-old has
made no secret of his
desire to coach Inter
Milan, who he turned
out for during his playing career.
But despite the doubts regarding his next
move, Simeone will not rule out staying in
the Spanish capital beyond the expiration
of his current deal.
‘What happened with the contract was
about what I thought was best for Atletico
Madrid,’ he told beIN Sports.
‘Everyone always says that possibly I will
leave in a year and a half, and what the
fans might think of that.
‘But I could also extend the contract.
‘The media are very skilful at creating
controversies, which is fine, it must be
accepted, and maybe you should answer
better so it does not happen.’
Atletico’s form has stuttered this season
and Simeone’s side find themselves 6th in
La Liga, despite finishing above Bayern
Munich in their Champions League group.
And Simeone believes talk about his future
is irrelevant while he’s trying to turn their
fortunes around.
‘They asked my sister did she think that
someday I would coach in Italy, and she
said it could happen, it would not be
strange,’ he added.
‘They asked my son one day at a Genoa
versus Inter game and he said it could
happen someday.
‘I have chosen not to speak any more,
especially as the results of the team are
not great. The important thing for the
Atletico fans are the facts.
‘Words come and go, but facts show you
the real person. When I leave here it will be
because it is good for the club.’
